To Brief Amarande, contact her Clerk: (02) 9267 4955, clerk@sgchambers.com.au
Amarande is a criminal barrister with a strong focus on trial advocacy, appearing regularly in both prosecution and defence matters.
‘I understand problems pretty quickly, I’m proactive, and I don’t sit on things — I just get them done.’
Before being called to the Bar, Amarande practised as a solicitor for twelve years, including at legal aid and as a senior solicitor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions where she worked on complex criminal prosecutions including running trials for the Crown.
Her decision to move to the Bar was driven by an ambition to focus exclusively on advocacy, particularly jury work, where she thrives on explaining complex issues in a way that is accessible, persuasive and grounded in common sense.
Amarande is particularly interested in criminal work connected to broader public safety issues, including high risk offender matters, proceeds of crime proceedings, and is open to developing a practice at the intersection of criminal law and related fields, including cases with medical or forensic complexity. She also practices in family law.
Ama’s growing body of published decisions reflects both the volume and quality of her advocacy work, and she is particularly proud of a contested special hearing where she successfully advanced an alibi defence and obtained a costs order.
Amarande is on a number of Legal Aid Commission panels, is fluent in French, has done work in different jurisdictions, including Alice Springs, and is open to further work involving travel.
Beyond the courtroom, she holds a degree in journalism and has professional experience in radio and documentary production, including work with 2SER and ABC Radio National. This background continues to inform her communication style and her interest in public legal commentary.
She has also enjoyed her time as a member of the bar choir and the Honeybees choir.
