James Leaver

Barrister · Samuel Griffith Chambers

James has practised at the New South Wales Bar since 2017. He brings a thoughtful, analytical approach to criminal law and is regularly briefed in complex matters.

‘People come to you at the worst moment of their lives. They are entitled to counsel who has done the work, will tell them the truth and help them find a way through.’

He maintains a substantial indictable and summary crime practice and appears in cases involving serious criminal allegations, including drug offences, sexual offences, offences of violence and offences of dishonesty. He also assists clients required to appear before commissions, inquiries and other bodies exercising coercive powers.

His advocacy is built on a sound command of criminal law and procedure, sharp strategic judgement and a thorough grasp of the detail of each case. He approaches every matter on its own terms, with the conviction that there is always a way through, even in the most challenging circumstances. Instructing solicitors return to him for his clear advice and forensic judgement, and he is well regarded by opponents and the bench alike.

James is driven by the human dimensions of criminal defence work. He values the opportunity to assist people at critical moments in their lives and regards the role of counsel as one of trust, responsibility and intellectual challenge.

Beyond practice, James has devoted considerable time to community legal work. He was involved with the Inner City Legal Centre for sixteen years, beginning as a volunteer and going on to serve as a solicitor, board member and Chair of the Centre.

His personal interests include travel, sailing and cryptic crosswords — hobbies that reflect the tenacity and problem-solving instincts he brings to his work at the Bar.
