Johnson Jiang

Barrister · Samuel Griffith Chambers

Johnson’s practice is focused primarily on sentencing proceedings and advice in committal matters, particularly those under the Early Appropriate Guilty Plea (EAGP) regime for both State and Commonwealth proceedings. He regularly appears in the Local Court in defended hearings, District Court sentences, as well as in the Supreme Court on bail applications, and while his practice includes trials, many of his cases are resolved through effective negotiation or comprehensive written and oral submissions.

‘I spend time with my clients. It’s a daunting process going through the legal system, and a lot of people just need things properly explained.’

A significant aspect of Johnson’s work involves matters concerning mental health, intellectual disability, and vulnerable accused persons, and he is experienced in assisting clients who may face language barriers or have limited understanding of the legal process.

Johnson is committed to clear communication, careful preparation, and effective advocacy. He brings a calm, measured approach to criminal defence work at all stages of proceedings, and spends considerable time with clients, ensuring they understand the nature of the charges, the evidence and the proceedings. His upfront, candid approach has earned him the trust of both instructing solicitors and clients, particularly those clients navigating the criminal justice system for the first time.

Johnson was attracted to criminal practice for its complexity, human dimension, and the opportunity to speak directly on behalf of clients in court. He speaks Mandarin fluently and has a working understanding of Cantonese.
