Readers

Samuel Griffith Chambers recognises the importance of supporting those starting out at the Bar.

We have two readers’ desks in our library which ensures that the readers have their own space but are encouraged to interact with their more experienced colleagues. The space includes a cupboard for robes.

We generally accept one reader each course, depending on the quality of the applicants and this means our readers usually overlap.

Chambers welcomes expressions of interest from prospective readers who intend to undertake the Bar Practice Course in 2024.

The criteria for determining applications includes:

  • a strong CV
  • support from the profession;
  • an interest in criminal law;
  • a genuine commitment to fulfill the term, and
  • whether the applicant shows promise as an advocate and has a personality suited to floor harmony.

An applicant should have at least one tutor on the Floor.

Prospective readers will be interviewed prior to their application being submitted to the Floor for a decision.

If a room is available for sale at the completion of their course, a reader may apply to purchase a room. All applications must be approved by the Floor members.

Letters of interest and CVs may be forwarded to the Clerk marked to the attention of the Directors.
