John Peluso
John’s entire approach to the law is grounded in strong personal values formed early in life, influenced by his education, which emphasised social justice, humility and service to the community. Those principles continue to guide his work at the Bar, and his practice is shaped by a deep commitment to fairness, compassion and the protection of the underdog.
John practises exclusively in criminal defence, appearing regularly in the District Court and Supreme Court, with a practice encompassing serious Local Court matters, trials and sentencing proceedings. He also appears in the Industrial Court defending criminal prosecutions arising from workplace safety and industrial matters and is deeply committed to the areas in which he practises.
John has a genuine love of the courtroom and a particular respect for jury trials, which he sees as one of the justice system’s most important safeguards. He values the role of everyday citizens in the legal process and is known for relating naturally and clearly to juries, clients and courts alike. His down‑to‑earth, approachable manner is firmly grounded in experience and authority.
One of the most significant matters of John’s career involved the successful defence of a client in a complex Supreme Court murder trial with multiple accused. Beyond the acquittal itself, John secured a rare award of costs against the State, resulting in substantial reimbursement to both Legal Aid and the client’s family.
John has practised across Australia, including Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory, and has also appeared internationally, including extended work in Fiji. He is highly regarded by solicitors for his professionalism, empathy and steadfast commitment to his clients, and maintains a loyal and long‑standing referral base.
Outside the courtroom, John enjoys surfing and spending time by the ocean, which reflects the balance and grounded perspective he brings to both his life and his practice.
‘What I like most is the interaction with people — that’s a big part of it for me.’
