Readers

Samuel Griffith Chambers recognises the importance of supporting those starting out at the Bar.

We are keen to welcome readers who are a good fit for the floor and would like to start their career at the bar on a collegiate and busy trial floor.

We have two fully equipped working areas for readers in our library, which ensures each reader has their own space. Readers are encouraged to interact with their more experienced colleagues, participate in floor activities and take full advantage of the floor’s genuine open door policy.

Readers are provided with full access to the floor’s library subscriptions. A reduced licence fee is charged for a twelve-month period to assist their transition to the Bar.

The floor has a solid history of accomodating readers after they have completed their reading year, by being able to offer rooms for purchase or licence depending on availability and means.

Chambers welcomes expressions of interest from prospective readers who intend to undertake the Bar Practice Course. Applications will be considered at any time, and applicants may apply at any stage of their journey to the bar.

The criteria for determining applications includes:

  • a strong CV
  • support from the profession;
  • an interest in criminal law/quasi-criminal law; and
  • whether the applicant shows promise as an advocate and has a personality suited to floor harmony.

Prospective readers will be invited to meet with members of the Board of Directors.

Letters of interest and CVs may be forwarded to the Clerk, Michael Wilcox, marked to the attention of the Directors.
